GET FIT WITH PARKDEAN HOLIDAYS

13 August 2009
GET FIT AND HAVE FUN AS A FAMILY WITH PARKDEAN HOLIDAYS
A guide to the fitness benefits of enjoying the diverse activities available on holiday
With its fantastic array of activities for all ages, Parkdean Holidays has drawn up a guide to the fitness benefits of having fun at any one of its 24 fabulous parks, set in some of the best locations in the UK.
Stephen Griffiths, Regional Director of South West Parks, Parkdean Holidays says: “Our parks are designed for families to have fun together in the fresh air and we are very supportive of the Change4Life campaign. Holidays are perfect for rediscovering how enjoyable it is to play and be active together: swimming; cycling; walking on the beach looking for shells; trekking through the countryside; learning to surf, or dancing in the evening, the list is endless! A holiday is the perfect time to start as you mean to go on. Many of the activities we provide support the Change4Life recommendations, including cycling, walking and ‘going wild’ – our nature trails are great for explorers of all ages. We hope that when our guests leave they feel relaxed, invigorated and healthier.”
As just one example of how fit you can get while on a Parkdean holiday, we’ll take a look at a family of four staying at one of Parkdean’s eight Cornish holiday parks, for one week. The parks located in Cornwall offer unique opportunities for the whole family to enjoy a wide range of healthy activities with parks located in both picturesque woodland and beachside settings*, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy having fun in the fresh air.
*not all parks offer all activities
The figures below show the calories that a family of four would burn if they decided to take part in the following activities (for one hour) together over seven days. (This is a suggested schedule of activities only – Parkdean Holidays does not offer organised fitness programmes at its parks)

Swim expert, Phillip Madden, Owner, Seriously Fun adds, “Swimming can be enjoyed by everybody, irrespective of age, physical ability or swimming proficiency. It is also an effective cardiovascular exercise building lung capacity, with low impact pressure impact on bones and joints. Most children enjoy the water, especially when accompanied by family members in an informal surrounding. This is the best time to promote water as a fun engaging experience, build confidence and a positive association with swimming. A few games include; having a race, blowing or splashing an object across the water, disappearing under water, picking up coins from the pool floor, swimming through parent’s legs underwater, ‘what’s the time Mr Shark’ or ‘tag’ with a group etc.”
Running guru, David Castle, Editor, Running Fitness comments, “Running on holiday has to be the best time to experience the sport. And the beauty of running is that you can do it anywhere. But, while some urban locations might offer something functional (a pavement!), to truly experience the joys of running, you need to head leave the pressures of city life behind and head for the country. Not only is the scenery more attractive, your choice of routes is endless and you can discover new runs for yourself. Not only that, but by varying the surface you run on - grass, sand, woodland trails - you can spice up your training without putting the same levels of force through your body that you'd experience on the road. Running is a great family sport, too, and ideal for kids wanting to burn off a bit of surplus energy.”
Parkdean Holidays has eight parks in Cornwall and a further 16 parks at locations throughout Scotland, South Wales, plus Devon, Dorset, Hampshire and Norfolk. With spacious caravans and luxury lodge holiday homes, Parkdean Holidays’ high standard of accommodation appeals to those looking for great value family holidays and breaks, or couples and groups who want a Parkdean ‘Star Park’ experience, enjoying the very highest levels of accommodation, facilities, locations and service. There are also great touring and camping plots available. UNPREDICTABLE WEATHER WILL NOT AFFECT AUGUST BANK HOLIDAY ROAD MISERY WARNS EUROP ASSISTANCE

Over 10 million drivers took to the roads over the May Bank Holiday and the last weekend of August is set to be just as busy, as UK residents opt for breaks in Britain over trips abroad, despite the unpredictable British weather.

Europ Assistance, one of the leading motor breakdown assistance companies, is warning motorists of the congestion hot spots to avoid this August Bank Holiday. The company is also advising travellers to leave plenty of time for their journeys and ensure vehicles are roadworthy to avoid motor breakdowns.

Predicted Hot Spots:

A303 and M4/M5 West bound – routes down to the Southwest will once again be busy. Motorists are advised to start journeys as soon as possible. Predicted heavy congestion is for Friday 28th from 1530hrs onwards.

M1 Southbound – watch out for hotspots southbound from Leeds, Sheffield and Nottingham

M6 / M74 to Scotland – the “Staycation” trend is enticing more people to explore Scotland for short breaks this year

M4 East and West bound – Reading Festival takes place across the bank holiday weekend and although good public transport links are in place, congestion is predicted

Routes into Wales – M4/ M5

M11 / A11 to Norfolk

Europ Assistance has issued the following top tips on what to check before you set off on your trip:

Oil – it is important to check oil levels are correct as this can affect engine performance

Water – make sure the water and coolant levels in the car radiator are topped up to avoid overheating. It is also worth carrying spare water in case levels do drop.

Tyre pressure – correct tyre pressure and tread depth are essential to ensure safety and aid handling and fuel economy

Wipers – ensuring wiper blades are in good condition and that washer fluid is topped up will maximise visibility

Battery – check the condition of your vehicle battery prior to a long journey

Sustenance – make sure you have food and water in the car, along with warm clothes and a mobile phone for emergency use

Maps – it sounds basic but make sure you know where you are going, take five minutes to check a map or input details into a sat nav

Consult vehicle handbooks for further information or take advantage of free vehicle inspections from a reputable supplier.

“At holiday times the UK’s roads can be bad enough without avoidable breakdowns adding to motorists’ headaches. These simple checks could help reduce breakdowns if motorists just take five minutes to inspect their vehicles prior to travelling,” says Paul Everett, Director of Sales and Marketing, for Europ Assistance.

TransLinc delivers first 21 new Iveco 65C18 tippers to Sunderland Council

A total of 51 vehicles to be supplied in three phases on five-year contract hire with maintenance agreements

Digicore telematics system will help identify more efficient usage patterns that reduce operating costs

Sunderland Council has taken delivery of 21 new Iveco 65C18 tippers for its Highways and Parks divisions from TransLinc, the UK’s leading local authority fleet provider.

The first of three vehicle delivery phases, it will be followed by a further 30 Iveco 35C12 tippers that will take up duties with the Council’s Cleansing division and Highways division.

The new fleet will be delivered by the end of August and includes a mix of 3.5 tonne and 6.5-tonne versions, all of which are supplied on a five-year contract hire with maintenance agreement. Servicing will be carried out by local Iveco dealer, North East Truck & Van.

Sunderland Council’s Fleet Manager, Dave Taylor, said: “All of the vehicles have been fitted with Digicore telematics systems so we can monitor fuel consumption and vehicle location, in order to identify more efficient usage patterns that could reduce costs.

“They also feature a ‘panic button’ which is linked direct to Sunderland Council’s central alarm panel. This will help us to improve lone-driver security.”

The 3.5-tonners will be used for grounds maintenance duties with the Council’s Highways and Parks divisions, and feature twin-wheel rear axles for increased traction when driving on grass.

Meanwhile, the 6.5-tonne vehicles all feature Dell tail-lifts and compressors enabling them to carry the heavier equipment required to complete general highways maintenance and drainage maintenance duties. Five of these vehicles also feature a converted crewcab where tools can be stored more securely.

Steve Tindall, Regional Sales Manager at TransLinc, added: “These new vehicles, fitted with the latest telematics technology, will provide greater protection and additional peace of mind for drivers. They will refresh Sunderland Council’s vehicle fleet and could also help to reduce fleet operating costs.”

Follow in the footsteps of the stars!

AVIS ‘BEST OF BRITISH’ GUIDE TO FILM LOCATIONS

The Avis Rent A Car team invites you into the world of film, by revealing the locations of several iconic flicks! So if you’re stuck for inspiration this Summer, why not rent a car and follow in the footsteps of your favourite movie-stars?

Explore hidden film locations around the UK. For example, did you know…

Bridget Jones Diary (2001)
Remember the scene on the boating lake where Bridget and Daniel go out in paddle boats, and Daniel famously falls into the water? That was filmed at Stoke Park Golf Club in Buckinghamshire. A beautiful country club resort; take your special someone there for a luxurious weekend and relive Bridget’s weekend of romance – hopefully with a happier ending than her and Daniel Cleaver had though!

Robin Hood (filming presently)
Russell Crowe is currently filming a remake of the epic Robin Hood tale, directed by Sir Ridley Scott. The classic tale is being filmed in several locations around the UK, including Bourne Woods in Surrey. Why not hop in an Avis car and head to the area where filming is currently taking place - you might even come across Russell himself, firing arrows and sweeping Maid Marion off her feet!

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince (2009)
With the sixth installment of the Harry Potter series now on release, why just admire the scenery on film, when you can experience it first-hand? Locations for filming have been very cleverly chosen, with only the best characteristics and environments used to benefit the magical feel of the films. Fort William in Scotland has been used on more than one of the films and Gloucester Cathedral was used for the Half Blood Prince along with Surbiton Railway station.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968)
An oldie but a goodie, this classic British film is a heart-warming tale with some unusual props and characters! Starring Dick Van Dyke as Caractacus Potts and Sally Anne Howes as Truly Scrumptious. Filming took place mainly in Buckinghamshire, in places such as Turville, the Lacy Green Smock Windmill in High Wycombe and the area of Hambleden. Easily accessible by car, with some lovely picturesque villages to explore if you’re a fan of this classic film.

Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994)
A famous British romantic comedy staring Hugh Grant as ladies’ man, Charles, and Andie MacDowell as the American beauty he falls for. Quite a few scenes in this film were shot in different areas of London, such as Camden. However other locations include The Crown Hotel in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, and St. Michael’s Church in Betchworth, Surrey.

Shakespeare in Love (1998)
Starring Joseph Fiennes as Will Shakespeare and Sandra Reinton as Rosaline - two star crossed lovers! This hopelessly romantic film was set in some beautiful locations around England, including Holkham Beach in Norfolk and Broughton Castle in Banbury. These are two extremely romantic places; why not discover them for yourself?

So why not take a trip into the magical world of movies and discover where your favourite scenes were filmed and acted out. A great day out and, who knows, you may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the stars on set!

Car rental from Avis starts from £15 a day .

For more movie locations and great ideas on how to fill your summer, visit the ‘Best of British’ guide on the avis.co.uk website.

HOW WELL DO YOU KNOW YOUR GREAT BRITAIN?

Avis survey reveals 45% of us don’t know where Stonehenge is!

With summer 2009 dubbed as ‘The Great British Staycation’, Avis Rent A Car decided to put the Nation to the test to see how well we know our city skylines from our hidden gems.

The findings revealed some shocking results; 45% of us don’t know where Stonehenge is, and over 30% confused the Scottish Sands of Morar for a beach in the Caribbean! British city skylines were mistaken for Sao Paulo and New York, and UK ports were thought as beautiful as those of Cyprus.

However, all is not lost - 74% of respondents confirmed that the Angel of The North is situated in Gateshead and 65% knew that the White Horse landmark is in Wiltshire.

Perhaps the most shocking result of all was that 40% of us could not identify the oldest and largest castle in the world - Windsor Castle - an Official Residence of Her Majesty The Queen!

It goes to show that there’s a wealth of world-class destinations and spectacular scenery right here in Britain – from stunning cityscapes to idyllic beaches – and you don’t need to go too far to see them!

As part of its Best of British campaign, Avis is encouraging everyone to explore and discover what we have on our own doorstep. To help you get out and about, Avis Staff have compiled a ‘Best of British’ guide on the avis.co.uk website, where you can also take advantage of car rental from just £15 a day at selected locations. For phone bookings call 08445 818181.

TOTAL ANNOUNCES SME TIE UP WITH COMPARECONTRACTHIRE.COM

Total Accident Management has increased its focus on the SME sector by announcing a tie up with the car and van leasing aggregation website www.comparecontracthire.com.

Total is working with www.comparecontracthire.com to offer accident management services to all companies who use the site enabling them to access its Fleet 1-Call service which has been developed specifically for SMEs.

1-Call provides a vast range of SME services including fault and non fault claims management, repair deployment and insurer liaison, driver mobility, consolidated billing, credit hire, credit repair and personal injury.

This level of accident management service has previously only been available to large corporate fleets, but is relevant to SMEs who are fully comprehensively insured and with a low excess.

“Total Accident Management and Comparecontracthire.com are closely aligned in their respective operating practices having developed product offerings for SMEs to increase their buying power, reduce administration hassles and improve the service levels they would normally receive from suppliers,” said Penny Stoolman, Total’s managing director.

“Comparecontracthire.com is offering more and more value added services to SMEs and this relationship with Total will plug a missing gap in the area of accident management.

“Together with Total I hope to further support the SME market at a time when they need to be concentrating on their core business rather than worrying about keeping their drivers mobile and getting cars repaired,” explained Robert Wastell, managing director of Comparecontracthire.com.

AVOID SUMMER HOLIDAY HELL AND EXTORTIONATE COSTS

EUROP ASSISTANCE ADVISES MOTORISTS ON DRIVING ABROAD

Thousands of UK motorists have car accidents while abroad and driving on unfamiliar roads. This can cost travellers thousands of pounds to bring their vehicles home and can also result in serious injury or worse. Europ Assistance, a leading UK travel insurance and motor assistance company, has issued this stark warning and highlights accident hot spots, as many start the great summer getaway.

“Turkey, Latvia and Portugal are the most dangerous European countries in which to drive*. Motorists need to take care in these hot spots,” says Paul Everett, Director of Sales and Marketing, Europ Assistance, UK. “We have also put together some basic but essential tips to help drivers abroad.”

· Plan your journeys – while still at home take time to familiarise yourself with area maps, calculate how long specific journeys will take you. It is also advisable to be aware of specific driving etiquette in your destination.

· Ensure you have Motor Assistance cover – whether taking your own car, a hire car or renting when you get there, the key is to prepare. Taking out personal travel insurance and motor assistance in addition to vehicle insurance is essential. If the worst happens and you are left stranded or hospitalised in a foreign country this will save you time, money and grief. From a cost of just £10.60 Europ Assistance’s European Motor Breakdown policy could potentially save you over £1,250 (the average cost of transporting an un-roadworthy vehicle back to the UK).

· Remember your essential contact telephone numbers – a quick call to Europ Assistance’s 24 hour multi-lingual call centre and all the hassle can be taken out of your situation, however dire. Europ Assistance can even help if your car is broken into and items are stolen or if you fall ill, its European Motor Breakdown policy offers comprehensive cover.

· Check your vehicle before you travel – If you choose to drive your own vehicle abroad check tyres, oil, filters, fluid levels etc before you leave.

· Remember what side of the road you’re driving on! – It sounds simple enough but most accidents abroad are caused by confusion at roundabouts and junctions due to right hand drive rules.

· Don’t Drink and Drive – Most European laws are stricter than the UK’s and any offence could invalidate your insurance.

Last year The Europ Assistance Group provided 2.6 million motorists with breakdown assistance. The company is offering customers a handy guide to continental motoring online at http://www.europ-assistance.co.uk/.

Europ Assistance advises motorists to make sure they are covered for continental motoring in addition to their UK cover. If their standard UK policy does not allow for journeys abroad, they should extend their cover to ensure that it includes breakdown whilst in Europe. Customers should also consider whether they are covered for their journey to and from the ferry port. If for any reason they are unable to take their vehicle abroad, they can benefit from a hire car for the duration of the holiday. Many companies also offer a combined breakdown and travel insurance package.

EUROP ASSISTANCE RECRUITS CHRIS MORTON AS BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MANAGER

Europ Assistance, one of the UK’s leading insurance and assistance organisations has appointed Chris Morton as Business Development Manager.

Chris started his career within Operations at Assurant Solutions in 1999. During his time with Assurant he filled various roles culminating in a move to Sales and Marketing as Product Development Manager. Chris gained a broad knowledge of proposition management, product design and distribution strategies in addition to his knowledge of operational management.

Comments Paul Everett, Sales and Marketing Director for Europ Assistance,
“Europ Assistance is currently focusing on developing additional products and services to compliment its traditional offerings in the areas of health, home & family, ID theft assistance, motor assistance and travel. As we continue to grow our business, Chris’s breadth of experience will enable him to work with our clients and to support new prospects at all stages of their product development.”

Adds Chris “Having previously worked in partnership with Europ Assistance I had seen first hand their underwriting expertise and excellence in delivering a range of quality assistance and insurance products and have always been particularly impressed with the service provided to the customer. I am delighted to join them and look forward to providing a major contribution to their growth strategy through building strong relationships with their corporate partners”

Best for rock-pooling

Best for rook-pooling, Devon’s Shoalstone beach is a family favourite. This shingle rock beach is a minefield of rock-pools, home to secretive sea creatures seeking sanctuary until the next tide. Best for car buffs

If you have a budding Jeremy Clarkson in the family then you should head down to Beaulieu in Hampshire for the day. LEASEDRIVE VELO OUTSOURCES NON-FAULT CLAIMS TO TOTAL ACCIDENT MANAGEMENT

Leasedrive Velo has outsourced its non -fault accident vehicle replacement and personal injury business to Total Accident Management.

More than 500 cases per year will be passed to Total by Leasedrive Velo, which currently has nearly half of its vehicle fleet on accident management.

At the heart of Total’s proposition is Fleet Indemnity which has specifically been set up to handle non-fault claims for fleets with existing in-house accident management operations.

Fleet Indemnity allows Total to seamlessly support a current in-house team or accident management supplier with its specialist expertise in non-fault claims. In the case of Leasedrive Velo, it is providing a like-for-like credit hire service for both mainstream and prestige cars, a credit repair service when required and will manage all personal injury claims.

Like-for-like credit hire is very important to Leasedrive Velo as it has some blue chip clients who run a high proportion of prestige cars on their fleets. Total reckons on getting a like-for-like car, even a Porsche, to a driver within four hours of being notified of the incident.

“Non-fault claims can be very timely, complex and costly to manage. Total is very experienced in managing non-fault claims and its Fleet Indemnity product supports our current accident management service very neatly,” explained Leasedrive Velo’s commercial director, Roddy Graham.

“There are cashflow benefits of Total managing this process for us, plus we will benefit from Total’s extensive credit hire fleet which enables us to meet our customers’ like-for-like vehicle replacement demands,” he added.

Penny Stoolman, managing director of Total Accident Management commented: “Leasedrive Velo was very specific about how we could add value to its accident management proposition. Managing non-fault claims will bring immediate benefits to Leasedrive Velo and its drivers without disrupting its current accident management infrastructure.”

This is the second high profile outsourcing contract Total has secured in the leasing sector in the past two months, the other was with ALD.
