GET FIT AND HAVE FUN AS A FAMILY WITH PARKDEAN HOLIDAYS
A guide to the fitness benefits of enjoying the diverse activities available on holiday
With its fantastic array of activities for all ages, Parkdean Holidays has drawn up a guide to the fitness benefits of having fun at any one of its 24 fabulous parks, set in some of the best locations in the UK.
Stephen Griffiths, Regional Director of South West Parks, Parkdean Holidays says: “Our parks are designed for families to have fun together in the fresh air and we are very supportive of the Change4Life campaign. Holidays are perfect for rediscovering how enjoyable it is to play and be active together: swimming; cycling; walking on the beach looking for shells; trekking through the countryside; learning to surf, or dancing in the evening, the list is endless! A holiday is the perfect time to start as you mean to go on. Many of the activities we provide support the Change4Life recommendations, including cycling, walking and ‘going wild’ – our nature trails are great for explorers of all ages. We hope that when our guests leave they feel relaxed, invigorated and healthier.”
As just one example of how fit you can get while on a Parkdean holiday, we’ll take a look at a family of four staying at one of Parkdean’s eight Cornish holiday parks, for one week. The parks located in Cornwall offer unique opportunities for the whole family to enjoy a wide range of healthy activities with parks located in both picturesque woodland and beachside settings*, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy having fun in the fresh air.
*not all parks offer all activities
The figures below show the calories that a family of four would burn if they decided to take part in the following activities (for one hour) together over seven days. (This is a suggested schedule of activities only – Parkdean Holidays does not offer organised fitness programmes at its parks)

Swim expert, Phillip Madden, Owner, Seriously Fun adds, “Swimming can be enjoyed by everybody, irrespective of age, physical ability or swimming proficiency. It is also an effective cardiovascular exercise building lung capacity, with low impact pressure impact on bones and joints. Most children enjoy the water, especially when accompanied by family members in an informal surrounding. This is the best time to promote water as a fun engaging experience, build confidence and a positive association with swimming. A few games include; having a race, blowing or splashing an object across the water, disappearing under water, picking up coins from the pool floor, swimming through parent’s legs underwater, ‘what’s the time Mr Shark’ or ‘tag’ with a group etc.”
Running guru, David Castle, Editor, Running Fitness comments, “Running on holiday has to be the best time to experience the sport. And the beauty of running is that you can do it anywhere. But, while some urban locations might offer something functional (a pavement!), to truly experience the joys of running, you need to head leave the pressures of city life behind and head for the country. Not only is the scenery more attractive, your choice of routes is endless and you can discover new runs for yourself. Not only that, but by varying the surface you run on - grass, sand, woodland trails - you can spice up your training without putting the same levels of force through your body that you'd experience on the road. Running is a great family sport, too, and ideal for kids wanting to burn off a bit of surplus energy.”
